The importance of fair sanctions

We are all affected by our prejudices, even if we want to be fair. A study by Cynthia J. Guffey, and Marilyn M. Helms shows that there is a risk of discrimination in disciplinary measures at work. To avoid discrimination, managers are advised to focus on informing employees of the rules and consequences, to be consistent in disciplinary measures, implement disciplinary measures immediately, and to focus on the behavior, not on the employee.
