Being part of a self-governing team can be perceived as an opportunity for greater engagement and autonomy. It may also be felt that the organization is trying to squeeze more working hours out of its employees and place increased liability on the individual. The eventual outcome can be partly explained on the basis of how the arrangement is presented and gains support. According to a study by professor Lisa Niishi and her research team, employees who interpret new initiatives from HR as an advantage may demonstrate greater helpful/prosocial instinct and conscientious behavior at work in comparison with those who interpret the initiative negatively.
