Bring everyone’s job descriptions to the next meeting. Ask each team member to write down on post-it notes the situations when they feel that they have the authority to lead the group or make their own decisions. Put the post-it notes up below each job description. Is it possible to see where the mandate to lead and make decisions overlaps between various roles and where it is missing?

What are our roles when sharing leadership?

The importance of shared mental models – i.e. that all members of a team agree on items such tasks, methods, evaluations, etc. – is fundamental for cooperation. In the book Shared Leadership: Reframing the Hows and Whys of Leadership, contributors Shawn Burke, Stephen Fiore, and Eduardo Salas emphasize that there is a shared mental model that can be particularly important to establish – specifically, the model of the members’ roles and decision-making authority.
