3. Inclusive Decision Making - Take care of everyone's opinions and distribute authority

What is inclusive decision-making?
Team members often hold unique information that’s essential for innovation and effective decisions. But without solid processes and structured meetings, that knowledge can be lost—some people may dominate while others stay silent. Inclusive decision-making means everyone has had a chance to contribute input to the person responsible for the decision.

Why is this helpful?
When we share our unique knowledge, we unlock one of the most important drivers of innovation. Researchers Iris Lorscheid and Matthias Meyer found that decisions improve when everyone has equal opportunity to contribute and their arguments are listened to. Even if your preference isn’t chosen, you’ll feel more satisfied if the decision-making process feels fair.

Tips for inclusive decision-making exercises:
You want everyone to share their unique perspectives—which isn’t always easy. This requires active listening, even when opinions differ. Individual reflection can prevent groupthink, and speaking order may need to be structured. Habitud exercises support this. Note: You don’t need consensus. You just need clear mandates and input from the team.

You’ll know you’re doing well with principle 3 when…
Everyone receives timely information before decisions, has the opportunity to contribute, and knows who has the authority to decide.
