Ask a friend who has been trying to get you to try a new activity, to show you how it works. It is better if the activity is both social and challenges your brain, such as a new dance step, a knitting pattern or a tricky board game.

Think more clearly with the help of a new dance step

Are you starting to feel like your brain is getting older? That you have lost touch? Or that your former thinking capacity is nothing but a memory? Until the mid-1990s, researchers believed that humans were born with as many brain cells as they would die with. Today we know better – new cells grow throughout life! In addition, we can actively influence the development and aging of the brain with the help of our behavior. Cool, huh? This has been shown in a number of studies on neurological formability, including this one by Martin Lövdén and his colleagues. They were able to show that by persistently performing various thinking exercises, one could affect the nerve fibres of the brain cells, which communicate with other parts of the brain. You want this communication to work well if you want to be clear-minded!

By getting the brain to work, such as when we learn something completely new, we can actively influence our brain capacity. The researchers in this study also believe that the effect could partly be due to the social stimulus the test subjects received in connection with the exercises. Learning something new with a friend could therefore help you to experience your brain as young and alert again!
